Washington D.C. (Web Desk - 30 Mar 2021) Two teenage girls murdered a Pakistani UberEats driver in US
Police in Washington, D.C., said last week that two teenage girls had been charged with assaulting and killing a man with a taser. Muhammad Anwar, 66, was attacked with a taser on Tuesday when two girls tried to abduct him, the Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release.
A viral video posted to Twitter shows Anwar in a struggle with the accused, who then speed off and smash and flip the car with him dangling onto the side. After reaching at the scene and transporting Anwar to the hospital, police said, "all lifesaving efforts unsuccessful, the victim was pronounced dead."
Two teenage girls, a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old were charged with felony murder and armed carjacking with a taser.
Anwar emigrated from Pakistan in 2014, his family told NBC4. Anwar had been employed on an UberEats delivery Tuesday when the two girls tried to carjack him, according to a GoFundMe set up by a family member.
"Anwar was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who always provided a smile when you needed one," said the GoFundMe for Anwar. "He leaves behind a family, near and far, who cherish, love, and miss him dearly."
GoFundMe has raised over $ 500,000 in three days since its release on Thursday. Anwar was the financial backer for the family, and according to the fundraising page, the funds will be used to pay for their lost income and provide a traditional Islamic funeral.
"Although money won’t fill the gaping hole that his death has left in our family, it will help remove some of the stress and worry of daily living while we grieve and heal," an update to the GoFundMe said.
Mayor Morrell Bowser on Sunday criticized the sharing of a video on auto theft prevention.
In a statement to USA Today, the Mayor's Communications Office said the post, which was "posted" on Twitter, was "about raising concerns about this violent crime, harassment-related arrests and security signals." It is part of an effort to raise awareness. Continuing the statement, the "Post" should not be deterred by the tragic death of Muhammad Anwar. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and their families who have lost."
According to the Washington Post, there have been 46 carjackings in the country's capital in the first five weeks of this year, compared to eight in the same period last year. But in 2020, the MPD reported 345 carjackings, up 143% from 142% in 2019.
A spokesman for Uber told the WTOP: "We are devastated by the tragic news and our hearts go out to Muhammad's family during this difficult time. We are grateful that the suspects have been arrested and we thank the Metropolitan Police Department for its promptness in this investigation".
